We have around 60,000 thoughts a day – and 80% of these are negative. It is primal instinct for us to look out for potential danger, and the negative thoughts are designed to keep us in our comfort zones.


The truth is, in modern society, we don’t have to fear actual death when we leave the house in the morning, or turn up for a job interview, or ask someone out for a coffee – but that doesn’t stop an endless stream of negative dialogue:


· What if I make a fool of myself?


· Who am I to think I can do this?


· Everyone is going to judge me.


· I’m just going to mess it up so what’s the point?


· I’m too quiet/loud/short/tall/fat/thin/young/old etc


· Sooner or later everyone will find out I’m a fraud


And it’s easy to feel like we’re the only ones when we see our peers so confident and happy with their futures mapped out and showing so much strength… another truth is – this happens to ALL of us.


The important thing is to learn how to work WITH these negative thoughts instead of trying to block them out.


Young people are at great risk of mental health issues including anxiety, depression and self-harming. And more than half of mental illnesses emerge in us by the time we are 14 – the majority of which are carried throughout adulthood.


Although the teen years are a really vulnerable time, with 1 in 4 parents demonstrating concern for their children’s mental health, it’s also the BEST time to make some mindset changes and adopt lifelong strategies for happiness and success.
